A History in Progress

It all started in 2019, when two women, Wendy and Bonnie, saw the need for a space where progressive thinkers could come together and exchange ideas. Already active in Legislative District 13 Democrats, they teamed up with other engaged members to organize a gathering in a warm and inviting home setting. Thirty people attended that first meeting, with the goal of forming a more engaged and active group in Sun City Festival.

For the next meeting, they chose the local grille as the venue. Relying solely on word of mouth, attendance grew to 40 people. That initial momentum sparked something much larger. What began as a casual conversation soon evolved into an organized Interest Group. At the time, the use of the word “Democratic” was not permitted by the Association so the group adopted the name “Progressive Thinkers.”

As the group took shape, they began recruiting Precinct Committee Persons and volunteers, with a focus on educating residents about LD13 and encouraging participation in its meetings. Inviting guest speakers became part of their strategy, with Adrian Fontes—then Maricopa County Recorder—among the first to speak at a Sun City Festival event.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed in-person activities, but dedicated volunteers pressed on. They phone banked, texted, and delivered literature to Democrats and like-minded Independents in the area. Online meetings helped keep the group connected during this time. 

Originally part of LD13 Dems, the group became part of Legislative District 25 Dems following redistricting after the 2020 Census. With the emergence of new leadership, Leigh and Karen, came a rebranding of the organization—from the Festival Democratic Interest Group to the Festival Ranch Interest Group. The new name aligns with the official title of the expanding community, which encompasses four precincts and includes both a family-oriented section along with a 55+ section.

The group continues to expand, now boasting over 140 active members united in building a strong, supportive organization grounded in Democratic values and a shared vision of effective leadership.
